D50

D50 Offshore Cabin Cruiser

Goal. The project goal for 'Dolvik Cruiser 50’ is to design to customer specification an (approx) 50 foot offshore cabin cruiser. The boat's principal design feature is the capability to conduct sustained high-speed transits at 40-50 knots, sea and swell permitting. The Dolvik Cruiser 50 is to provide the best of two worlds: the thrill and exhileration of an offshore powerboat ride combined with the sanity and peace of mind when sailing a classic.

Design. The functionality of the boat will have to be ‘intelligent’, i.e. combined use of electronics and information technology enables the crew to quickly adapt to changing requirements in different situations. Use of modern propulsion systems, construction methods and materials will enhance comfort and reduce environmental impact (i.e. lower vibration, noise levels, exhaust). From the design perspective the boat will have to emanate a distinctive ‘wooden’ look and feel, different from existing fiberglass boats or aluminum hulls on the market today, and contain a timeless quality with elements from both the past and the future.

Activities. In addition to weekend trips the boat will be used during the summer holidays for coastal hopping style of sailing in the Skaw area, Baltic, along the coast of Norway and occasional crossings to the UK (CE classification 'B'). Main activities include : anchoring, swimming, with fishing and water-skiing from the dinghy. Preparing and enjoying meals is regarded as an important social activity and lay-out of the upper deck has a 'closeness' to the sea.

Dinghy. The dinghy (Zodiac 340 DL with 30 HP outboard) is located inside the garage above the engine room. The launch /recovery system can be operated by one man. The outboard is stored and lashed inside the dinghy when underway.

Maintenance. First line maintenance by owner. A spare parts package for essential electric systems, generator set and motors including a tool set is onboard. Separate storage for oil/ fuels/liquids and cleaning gear.

Yacht outline: Length 50 ft, speed 45 -50 knots, propulsion: 2 x Yanmar 8SY-STP-900 horse power diesels, cabins: 3, sleeps 6.

Hull construction: Composite wood construction with two layers of mahogany on the outside and fiberglass inside. West System epoxy with a white high gloss finish. Cabin Top Divinycell™ core for insulation against condensation and for noise-reduction with three layers of fiberglass cloth and epoxy, mahogany trim and integrated canvas sunroof. Deck: Mahogany with white seams, bonded to a core of Divinycell™ and marine-plywood base. Scratch resistant surface consisting of 5 layers of epoxy and a 5 layers 2-part UV.
